Italy: A Beautiful Amalgamation of History, Nature, Art, and Architecture

Gardena pass – Dolomites

After exploring Switzerland, we wondered what could possibly top such a heavenly experience. We aimed for a destination rich in history and culture, leading us to choose Italy.

“The creator made ITALY by designs from Michelangelo “ – MARK TWAIN, The famous American author has rightly emphasized in the above quote how Graceful, Enchanting and Perfect Italy is.

Accommodating Must-See Places

Italy is a unique country offering something for everyone: rich history, stunning landscapes, beautiful coastlines, awe-inspiring art, and breathtaking lakes. Due to its peculiar boot shape stretching from  north to south, accommodating everything into a single 8 to 10-night trip is challenging, no… its impossible. Italy can roughly be divided into three regions: Southern Italy (including Naples and the Amalfi Coast), Central Italy (with Rome, Florence, and Tuscany), and Northern Italy (with the Dolomites and Milan). With 8 nights at our disposal, we had to make the tough decision to skip everything south of Rome, including Naples and the stunning Amalfi Coast. This just gives us a reason to visit Italy again.

Flights

Book your flights early and keep an eye out for good deals. Flexibility with your travel dates can yield great bargains. We opted for a flight to Rome, proceeded north, and flew back from Milan.

Rome:

Colosseum

Rome being one of the busiest international airports was our first stop. European cities are not just to be seen; they are to be explored and experienced. Keep a list of must-see sights, but aimless strolls through the streets are the best way to create lasting memories. We visited the mighty Colosseum, the crowded Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the majestic Pantheon, and Piazza Navona.

Rome is a city where ancient history and modern life seamlessly blend. Walking through the city feels like stepping back in time, with ancient ruins like the Roman Forum, the Colosseum , adjacent to lively piazzas (squares) filled with cafes and street musicians. The Eternal City is a living museum, where every street and alley tells a story of its glorious past.

The Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, boasts St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums

Tips:

  1. Beware of pickpockets, especially in crowded places like metro stations. Four out of six couples in our group were pickpocketed. Don’t wear the Pouches, easy targets for the thieves, also make sure u don’t loose your passports at any cost.
  2. Exploring the Colosseum on our own using an app was informative, but the guided tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel was a stark contrast. Guided tours offer deep insights into the history and significance of these monuments. We have a deep regret not doing The Colosseum with a guide.
  3. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as these cities are best explored on foot.

Florence

Sunset view : Florence

A scenic high-speed train took us to Florence. Although a bit late, the train ride was enjoyable, though not as punctual as Swiss trains. Florence, the Renaissance capital located in Tuscany, is renowned for its history, art, and architecture. The city is laid-back and beautiful. The Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) and the Academia Galleria, home to Michelangelo’s masterpiece David, are must-visit sites. Walking through Florence feels like stepping back in time, with its narrow cobblestone streets, charming piazzas, and elegant bridges over the Arno River. The sunset view from Piazzale Michelangelo was a highlight, offering stunning cityscapes.

We were fortunate to enjoy performances of a few street musicians. you will often find live street musical performances.

Tips:

  1. Visit the statue of David.
  2. Enjoy leisurely strolls through the lanes and Savor local Italian cuisine.
  3. Wine tasting should be on must do list in Tuscany region for enthusiasts.
  4. Make sure to taste the wonderful Gelato especially one with Pista flavour.

Dolomites

Alpe de siusi

Next on our list were the beautiful Italian Alps, known as the Dolomites. Our train from Florence reached Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites. We rented cars at Bolzano station from torent rental car company, The process was flawless and we were fortunate to land up with 3 brand new automatic SUV’s. The mean machines took us through a ride of a lifetime through rugged mountains, stunning landscapes and beautiful lakes. The scenery was breathtaking, compelling us to stop frequently for photos. Although we initially planned to visit Seceda, the cable car was not operational. Instead, we decided to explore Alpe di Siusi by a cable car.

The views from the top were stunning, with snow-capped Alps and green meadows. There is a restaurant just outside the cable car station where we had one of the best meals of our trip and obviously with a view to die for.

We then drove to the picturesque town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, navigating mountain passes like Gardena and Falzarego. Despite frequent stops for photos, we reached in time for dinner at a wonderful B&B. Although our plan to hike Tre Cime di Lavaredo was thwarted by snow, we enjoyed the breathtaking Lago di Braies and other serene lakes like Lago Misurina and Lago Landro.

Tips:

  1. Most cable cars operate from June, so plan accordingly.
  2. Rent a car to fully experience the Dolomites. The public transport network here is sparse.
  3. The region is a paradise for trekkers and cyclists.
  4. Don’t miss the beautiful mountain passes.

Venice

Despite mixed reviews about Venice, we were pleasantly surprised. The city’s charm made it one of our favorite destinations. With its small canals, gondolas, and the famous San Marco square, Venice is perfect for a romantic stay.

St Marks Basilica, Venice

Although we missed the colorful Murano and Burano islands due to time constraints, the city’s unique charm left a lasting impression. Wandering through the narrow, winding streets and discovering hidden cafes and shops felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

Venice’s beauty lies in its intricate network of canals, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Each corner of the city offers a picturesque scene, from the ornate bridges to the bustling piazzas filled with life.

Milan

Our final stay was in Milan. Although short on time, we visited the architectural marvel, the Milan Duomo Cathedral. Milan is not only a hub of fashion and design but also home to rich historical and cultural landmarks. The blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication makes it a fascinating city to explore. Strolling through Milan, you can feel the city’s pulse in its elegant shops, historic sites, and stylish cafes. The grandeur of the Duomo and the sleek modernity of the city’s skyscrapers create a unique and captivating contrast.

Tips for Venice and Milan:

  1. Gondola rides are expensive and can be skipped.
  2. Venice has a good leather market.
  3. Combine Lake Como with a visit to Milan.
  4. Milan, the fashion capital, is perfect for shopping.

Reluctantly bidding farewell to Italy, we left with a sense of longing to return and explore the hidden treasures of Naples, the picturesque Amalfi Coast, enchanting Lake Como, and embark on more unforgettable hikes in the Dolomites. Italy’s endless beauty and charm promise countless adventures waiting to be discovered.
